Chapter Philanthropy: Painted Turtle Camp and Speech and Hearing
Community Involvement has been a large aspect of my life for many years. In high school, I participated in a wide variety of volunteer activities in my hometown. In my church I was a Vacation Bible School teacher. I also spend many hours at the Humane Society walking and bathing dogs. In my high school, I was a student leader for the PEERS program, educating middle school student of the dangers of risky behavior. Through this program I trained other high school students and devoted many hours to preparing presentations. I also am the reigning Strawberry Festival Queen in my hometown, through this program I devote time to giving back to the community through various events such as the Special Olympics, working with the Salvation Army, and raising money for other programs in the local area. One of my biggest involvements in my community is my work with the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. I was in charge of fundraising for my high school, which involved coordinating T-shirt Sales, donation buckets, and various themed athletic events. My school corporation's team raised over $20,000 one year for ACS. Since coming to Indiana University, I have attended various philanthropic events, volunteered at sporting events, and still do much volunteer work at home.
In high school I held many leadership positions in clubs as well as academics. I was the captain of both the varsity cross-country and swimming teams as a senior. I also was the Vice President of my class for two years. In addition I was an officer in National Honor Society and a Student Leader for the PEERS Mentoring Program. I also was in charge of fundraising for my schools team for the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. In addition, I have owned my own photography business since my junior year of high school and have to practice my leadership skills in any situation in which I am coordinating projects or working with clients.
